Fabuwood vs. Wellborn vs. KraftMaid: Which Cabinet Line Is Right for Your Kitchen?
An honest, contractor-level comparison of three cabinet lines we install—Fabuwood, Wellborn, and KraftMaid—so you can choose the right one for your project.
Cabinet selection is the decision that shapes everything else in a kitchen — it determines the aesthetic, the function, the lead time, and a significant portion of the budget. After 46 years installing cabinetry in Westchester, Rockland, and Bergen County kitchens, we've worked with most cabinet lines on the market. Here's an honest comparison of the three semi-custom lines we install most often: Fabuwood, Wellborn, and KraftMaid.
Fabuwood: The Best Value in All-Wood Semi-Custom
Fabuwood is manufactured in Newark, NJ — which matters because short supply chain distances mean more reliable lead times and faster issue resolution if something ships incorrectly. All Fabuwood cabinetry is constructed with solid wood face frames and all-plywood box construction (not particleboard). Soft-close hinges and undermount drawer glides are standard across the line, not upgrades. Door styles range from simple Shaker to more detailed raised-panel and beaded inset profiles. The finish quality is excellent for the price — paints are consistent and durable, stains show good wood character.
Fabuwood price range: $150–$450 per linear foot installed, depending on door style, finish, and interior accessories. Lead time: 2–3 weeks typical. Best for: full kitchen renovations where all-wood construction and good finish quality are priorities and the budget is $55,000–$95,000.
Wellborn: More Options, More Custom Flexibility
Wellborn Cabinet, manufactured in Ashland, Alabama, is a step up in customization flexibility. Their Cabinet line covers standard semi-custom, but their Estate line offers a much wider range of modifications: non-standard sizes in 3/8-inch increments (vs. the more limited sizing in value lines), more complex door profiles, a broader finish palette, and — most importantly for clients wanting a furniture-grade look — a true inset door option. Inset cabinetry, where doors and drawers sit flush within the face frame rather than overlaying it, requires more precision manufacturing and creates a more refined aesthetic. Wellborn is one of the few semi-custom lines that executes inset reliably.
Wellborn price range: $200–$650 per linear foot installed. Lead time: 2–3 weeks typical. Best for: projects where inset cabinetry is a priority, or where non-standard sizing and finish options matter. Budget range: $75,000–$140,000+ kitchen projects.
KraftMaid: The Most Recognized Name in Semi-Custom
KraftMaid is one of the most widely recognized cabinet brands in the country, sold through dealers and kitchen showrooms. Their cabinetry ranges from a stock-adjacent line to true semi-custom with solid wood face frames and all-plywood construction (available as an upgrade — verify it's specified, not just assumed). The finish quality and range of door styles is broad. KraftMaid's biggest advantage is familiarity — designers, homeowners, and contractors all know the product, which can simplify the selection process. The trade-off is that because KraftMaid is widely distributed, the brand carries less exclusivity, and quality can vary depending on which product tier is specified.
KraftMaid price range: $180–$600 per linear foot installed. Lead time: 2–3 weeks typical. Best for: clients who've researched the brand independently, or projects where a specific KraftMaid door style or finish is the right fit. Budget range: $60,000–$120,000 kitchen projects.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Which One Is Right for Your Kitchen?
If your priority is maximum value without sacrificing all-wood construction and quality finishes, Fabuwood is the right choice for most full kitchen renovations in the $55,000–$95,000 range. If you want inset cabinetry or need non-standard sizing that doesn't fit standard modular options, Wellborn's Estate line is worth the additional investment. If you have a specific attachment to the KraftMaid brand or a design that uses a KraftMaid door profile or finish that's the right aesthetic fit, it's an excellent choice. What matters most is that the line is specified correctly — all-plywood construction, soft-close hardware, and the right interior accessories for how you actually use your kitchen.
